Devon fishery back and open for business
Clawford Vineyard & Fisheries is an award-winning holiday village surrounded by 78 acres of beautiful countryside near the bustling market town of Holsworthy in Devon.
Ranked 16th in the Observer’s ‘Top 20 UK B&Bs’, owners John and Wanda Ray have lovingly developed the Clawford complex over the past 29 years to create the ultimate angling experience. Take your pick from superior one, two or three bedroom accommodation and opt for either self catering or bed and breakfast. There are a staggering 17 lakes of varying sizes to try, stocked with a range of fish including carp, tench, bream and trout. After a day on the lakes, sit back and relax in the homely bar and restaurant and enjoy some home cooking while you discuss the one that got away over a drink or two. You'll also find a games room, outside terrace and angling shop where you can stock up on your tackle.
In 2012, Clawford suffered a devastating blow when an alien fish species was discovered in two of the lakes. As a result, the Environment Agency undertook an extensive operation to completely remove the hazardous fish from the site. Despite John battling serious health issues, the couple have worked tirelessly to fully restock their waters with specimen native species.
Now stepping into a new era, Clawford is better than ever before. The holiday village caters for couples, groups and families with its alternating ‘adult only’ and ‘family’ weeks. And if you’re angling for a bit of competition, sign up for one of the open-pegged matches that take place every other Sunday. Non-residents can enjoy the lakes too with day tickets starting from 7.50 for 12 hours.
Clawford's rolling green hills are home to an abundance of wildlife from birds and butterflies to wild deer. Take it all in with an afternoon stroll through the pretty woodland or head to the cider apple orchards to soak up the stunning surroundings. If you fancy going further afield, there's plenty on the doorstep. The wilderness of Bodmin Moor and lovely seaside town of Bude are less than a 30-minute drive away, while Dartmoor National Park, Clovelly and Cornwall's Eden Project are within easy reach too.
Cosy accommodation, first-class facilities and John and Wanda’s warm welcome will make your stay at Clawford unforgettable at any time of year.
